Say cheese!
Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream are uniting two of the ultimate comfort foods into — you guessed it — mac and cheese ice cream.
The companies promise "a cool, creamy scoop of ice cream that brings that comforting, nostalgic feeling from a warm bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese," according to a news release.
Just in time for National Macaroni & Cheese Day, the limited edition cheesy concoction will hit shelves at Van Leeuwen shops in New York City, Los Angeles and Houston on July 14, as well as online at vanleeuwenicecream.com starting at 11 a.m. Eastern that day.
It will cost $12 a pint and be available as long as supplies last.
New Yorkers can grab a free taste of the treat while supplies last at an ice cream truck stationed in Union Square from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14.
According to Kraft, the inspiration behind the sweet, yet salty, ice cream concoction was putting a summery spin on a wintery comfort food, with the company's Senior Associate Brand Manager Emily Violett saying: 'We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream.
'That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with.
The majority of people brave enough to try a scoop determined that the concept was far more horrifying than the actual flavor, with some even admitting to enjoying their bite.
One person said of their taste test: 'The mac n’ cheese ice cream was completely different from what I assumed it’d be – who wanted a burger, frozen and laden with sugar, I thought. But a spoonful was all I needed to change my thought on it.
'It was actually really good – very much like butterscotch toffee, with some salted caramel on top. The aftertaste, however, did leave some faint taste of mac-n-cheese, so overall, I’d definitely eat it again.'
Another tester agreed, saying: 'The thought of mac and cheese ice cream initially seemed bizarre and quite unappealing.
'However, I was very pleasantly surprised. it somehow managed to taste both sweet and savory at the same time, and was incredibly smooth and creamy. I'd definitely have it again.'
Testers recommend that you disengage your brain before tasting the ice cream, thereby putting 'matter over mind' in order to really appreciate the unique flavors.
